Solution focused hypnotherapy (SFH) is a modern therapeutic approach informed by the latest psychology and neuroscience research. It builds on the highly effective Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and integrates the powerful therapeutic benefits of hypnosis, drawing on best practices from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and neuro‑linguistic programming (NLP).
It is also a person‑centred approach, trusting and empowering clients as the experts of their own minds and lives. Finally, SFH is action‑oriented: it focuses on the present — the place where clients have the most control — so they can take steady steps toward the life they want to create.
Why SFH and my personal connection with SFH
While celebrating the arrival of my first child, I also found myself experiencing an unexpected and unsettling dysphoria. It was confusing and disheartening when I found that I couldn’t access the therapeutic tools and psychological knowledge I normally relied on. After consulting several health professionals, I was diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder, linked to the profound transition into motherhood.
SFH was recommended to me, and it became another pivotal turning point in my life. It helped me develop a compassionate understanding of my overwhelmed and anxious mind, and showed me—through a simple process —that I could make small changes that gradually transformed how I felt. This experience empowered me both as a mother and as a therapist.
This transformation inspired me to train in SFH so I could offer the same life‑changing approach to others. Since then, I have supported many clients in navigating a wide range of challenges, witnessing individuals rediscover confidence, shift their mindset, reconnect with their passion, and pursue long‑held goals that once felt out of reach.
What SFH is for?
Stress is one of the major contributors to mental and physical challenges. Many difficulties people face — such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, OCD, and low self‑esteem — are closely linked to the brain’s stress response.
SFH equips clients with an understanding of how their brain works, offers simple and effective ways to manage stress and anxiety, and helps them reconnect with their intellectual resources to make positive changes. It is an effective approach for a wide range of physical and psychological symptomologies, including:
- Anxiety, depression
- IBS
- insomnia
- Phobias
- Addiction and habits cessation
- Weight managements
- Confidence and self-esteem
- OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)
- Pain and symptom management (e.g., ME, menopause)
- Personal development and spiritual exploration
- Exam and Performance enhancement
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis, sometimes called trance, is a deeply relaxed and selectively focused state that we naturally enter several times a day. In this state, mental noise and stress are reduced significantly, allowing the mind to become more receptive to helpful suggestions and to access pathways that support movement toward desired outcomes.
A typical session
A typical session lasts around one hour and follows a structure similar to the one below:
1. “What’s been good?”
A reflective conversation about positive moments from the week. This helps to:
- shift mental focus from difficulties to resources and resilience
- reduce stress levels
- cultivate confidence and a sense of safety
2. Neuroscience‑based psychoeducation
Empower clients through insight & understanding about themselves and how SFH support changes based on the latest research.
3. Scaling
Clients rate their wellbeing or performance on a scale of 0–10. This encourages self‑reflection and provides perspective and measurable progress.
4. Miracle questions
Clients explore what life would look like if they moved one step up their scale — what they would notice, do differently, or feel. This process supports meaningful, self-concordant goal setting.
5. Hypnosis
A deeply relaxed, focused state that helps integrate the insights and changes discussed during the session.
For certain specific symptoms, such as phobias or addictions, SFH may incorporate additional techniques. For example, “SWISH” is an NLP‑based method used to shift unwanted behaviours.
Outside sessions
Clients are encouraged to listen to an enjoyable hypnosis MP3 daily to calm the mind and improve sleep quality. Keeping a gratitude journal is also an important part of the process; research shows it can significantly reduce stress and enhance wellbeing and confidence.
Length of treatment
It typically takes 8 – 12 sessions. Smoking or vaping cessation is delivered in a single two‑hour session. For more severe or long‑standing symptoms, treatment may take longer.
